Tensions have escalated across Uttarakhand after an alleged assault on Education Director Ajay Naudiyal, triggering widespread anger among employee unions. Several officer and employee bodies have announced a work boycott on Monday, demanding the arrest of those involved. However, unions clarified that Uttarakhand Board examinations will remain unaffected to avoid inconvenience to students.
A series of emergency meetings held on Sunday at the education directorate in Dehradun and other districts saw multiple organisations unite to mount pressure on the state government. A core committee meeting scheduled for Monday afternoon will decide the future course of agitation, including the possibility of a statewide protest.
Employee leaders Ram Singh and Deepak Joshi alleged that the attackers locked the office door and attempted to kill the education director. They claimed CCTV footage and video evidence would reveal the full truth. Unions have demanded the arrest of Raipur BJP MLA Umesh Sharma Kau and others named in the complaint, warning of a larger movement if action is delayed.
Speakers at the meetings alleged that some ruling party leaders have been exerting pressure on officials for a long time. They also cited previous allegations made by a woman officer against a BJP leader, arguing that such incidents have created fear among government employees and teachers. According to union representatives, the attack has raised serious concerns about the safety and independence of officials in the state.
The controversy intensified after reports that some alleged supporters of the MLA were present during the incident, with even a purported history-sheeter’s name surfacing. However, Umesh Sharma Kau has denied the allegations, stating that only a few people accompanied him and no assault took place. An FIR has been filed naming the MLA and others, while a cross-complaint has also been lodged by his security personnel.
Senior BJP leader Prakash Suman Dhyanai has urged the party high command to intervene, saying that violence and misuse of power must not be tolerated. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand BJP chief Mahendra Bhatt has reportedly sought an explanation from the MLA.
With elections approaching, the growing anger among teachers and government employees is being seen as a potential political challenge for the BJP government. Notably, Umesh Sharma Kau had joined the BJP in 2016 after leaving the Congress along with former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna. The latest controversy is now being viewed as a fresh headache for the party in a politically sensitive year.
