Dehradun: 12 Feb 2026
The Ordnance Factory Karamchari Union on Wednesday staged a strong protest against the new labour codes, raising slogans inside the factory premises and demanding that the government roll back the laws to safeguard workers’ rights.
The protesters said that the four new labour codes implemented in 2025 replaced 29 existing labour laws. Trade unions allege that the new codes weaken worker protections, impose stricter conditions on strikes and union activities, and grant companies greater flexibility in hiring and retrenchment. Calling them “anti-worker,” labour organisations have demanded their immediate withdrawal.
Opposition to Privatisation of PSUs
During the protest, speakers also strongly opposed the privatisation of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). They argued that selling off PSUs increases job insecurity, weakens social security, and creates uncertainty about employees’ future.
Demand for Restoration of Old Pension Scheme
Union leaders reiterated their demand for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). They stated that the New Pension Scheme (NPS), being market-linked, does not guarantee stable post-retirement income.
Call for Minimum Wage Hike
Union representatives said that wages have not kept pace with rising inflation. They also demanded minimum wages and social security benefits for scheme workers, including Anganwadi and ASHA workers.
Protest Against Electricity Amendment Bill 2025
The protesters voiced concern over the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, claiming it could lead to higher electricity tariffs, increased burden due to smart meters and peak-hour charges, and greater contractualisation in the power sector, threatening permanent jobs.
Demands for Changes in Agricultural Policies
Extending support to farmers’ organisations, the union demanded a legal guarantee for MSP (Minimum Support Price), transparency in land and seed laws, and improvements in rural employment schemes.
Union leaders warned that if their demands are not addressed promptly, the agitation will be intensified in the coming days.
