India Optel Limited (IOL), a Mini Ratna Category-I Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Defence Production, has launched its high-magnification indigenous binoculars ‘Garuda’ in the civilian market.
Developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory Dehradun, a unit of India Optel Limited, the Garuda binoculars represent a significant step towards strengthening the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the field of precision optics. With a rich legacy of precision optical manufacturing dating back to 1943, IOL has combined its defence-sector expertise with modern technology to offer civilians a reliable and high-quality viewing experience. The Garuda binoculars offer 8x magnification and a wide 7.6-degree field of view, enabling users to observe distant objects clearly while covering a broad viewing area. The binoculars feature ±5 diopter adjustment to accommodate individual eyesight requirements. Soft-touch eyecups have been incorporated for comfortable long-duration viewing, while an ergonomic grip provides a firm and comfortable hold. Weighing approximately 610 grams, Garuda has been designed as a compact and portable optical device without compromising reliability. Its weather-resistant construction makes it suitable for use in a variety of outdoor conditions. The binoculars can be used for a wide range of activities, including birdwatching, wildlife observation, nature study, travel, sports, forestry, maritime activities and security-related applications.
From Defence Applications to Civilian Use
With the launch of Garuda, India Optel Limited has entered the civilian optics market, making its defence-grade optical capabilities accessible to the general public. The binocular platform is based on technology that has already served as a reliable optical companion for the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces in challenging operational environments. The company aims to provide outdoor enthusiasts and professional users with the precision and reliability developed through decades of military service.
Garuda Unveiled in New Delhi
The indigenous Garuda binoculars were formally introduced for civilian use on August 13, 2026, at the DPSU Bhawan in New Delhi, in the presence of Dr. Garima Bhagat, Joint Secretary (Land Systems). Senior officials from the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Central Armed Police Forces and Wildlife Society of India attended the event, along with members of the Board of Directors and senior officials of India Optel Limited. The launch of Garuda marks an important step in taking India’s indigenous defence optical technology beyond military applications and making it available to civilian users across a growing range of outdoor and professional activities.
